Same skills for martial arts and business?

Gina Carano, former MMA champion, is now on her way to becoming a film star.

Tony Hugo writes in “Warrior Wisdom” – “A person who succeeds in business demonstrates the same attributes as the martial artist who is effective in combat. The difference lies in their respective sources of motivation and perception. The business person may have no interest in the martial arts because he associates them with violence and physical aggression; and the martial artist may perceive the business person as being motivated solely by money. Both views arise from ignorance of what the other is about. This is understandable, however they both exhibit the same skill sets and have the potential, therefore, to thrive in each other’s arena if they were to apply their respective skills appropriately.”

What do you think? Do the same skills that make a good martial artist make a good business person?

One similarity I see is that both require persistence. In martial arts and in business both, you hit sticking points sometimes, you encounter resistance, you experience failures, and you must have the determination to never give up, to keep moving forward no matter what.

  1. I posted the image of Gina Carano because she is one of a long line of dedicated martial artists who have successfully made the transition to film acting. Though she’s early yet in her career, I think she’ll go far.
